Mist, Fog, and Haze Flashcards
Visibility of Fog (FG)
< 5/8 SM (1km or less)
Visibility of Mist (BR)
5/8 SM or more (1km or more but less than 5km)
Clear nights and light wind. Settle in low areas. Dissipates within a few hours after sunrise.
Radiation Fog
Drifting of warm damp air over a colder land or sea surface. May persist for days and cover wide areas.
Advection Fog
Cooling of air due to expansion as it moves up a slope with light wind to push it up the slope
Upslope Fog
Cold air passes over a warm water surface. Evaporation of the water into the cold air occurs until the cold air becomes saturated. the excess water vapor condenses as fog
Steam fog
Caused by the addition of moisture to the air through the evaporation of rain or drizzle. Mostly caused by warm fronts (frontal fog)
Precipitation induced fog
Forms in moist air during extremely cold and calm conditions. Tiny ice crystals are formed by sublimation.
