Anytime you stop, what should you check?
Tires, wheels, and rims
Lights and reflectors
Steering system defects
Missing nuts, bolts, cotter keys, or other parts
Bent, loose or broken such as steering column, tie rods.
Steering wheel play of more than 10 degrees or 2 inches of movement.
Exhaust system defects.
Loose, broken, or missing exhaust pipe, mufflers, or vertical stacks.
Loose, broken, or missing mounting brackets, clamps, bolts, or nuts.
Exhaust system parts that may be leaking.
What is the minimum tread depth for front tires?
4/32” tread depth in every major groove on front tires
What is the minimum tread depth for rear tires or trailer tires?
2/32” with no fabric showing through tread or sidewall
Name some things you should check for on the front of the vehicle during the walk around inspection?
Condition of front axel
Condition of steering system. Must grab steering mech to test for looseness.
Windshield and wipers
Lights and reflectors
What should wheel bearing seals be checked for?
Seals are not leaking
How many reflective triangles should you carry?
Three minimum
How do you check for hydraulic leaks?
Pump brake peddle three times and then hold for a minimum of five seconds. The peddle should not move.
Examples of tire damage
Cuts or other damage
tread separation
dual tires that com in contact with each other or parts of the vehicle
Mismatched sizes
radial and bias-ply tries used together
cut or cracked valve stem
Why should you back up toward the drivers side?
You can see better and use the side window if necessary
If stopped on a hill, how can you start without rolling back?
By using the parking brake
When backing up, why is it important to use a helper?
There are blind spots that you can not see
What is the most important hand signal that you and a helper can agree on?
“STOP”
What are two important condition that you should downshift?
Before going down hill and before entering a curve
When should you downshift an automatic transmission?
On downhill grades
Retarders keep you from skidding when the road is slippery? True or False
False
What are two ways to know when to shift gears?
Use engine speed (RPM) or use road speed (mph)
How far ahead should you look?
12 to 15 seconds ahead. One block city driving or 1/4 mile at highway speed.
What are two important things to look for ahead?
Looking for other vehicles entering the highway or changing lanes and look for brake lights of other vehicles.
What is the most important way to see the sides and rear of your vehicle?
Checking your mirrors regularly
What does “communicating” mean in safe driving?
Communicating to other drivers what you intend to do
Where should you place reflectors if stopped on a divided highway?
10’ 100’ 200’
What three things add up to stopping distance?
Perception distance; reaction distance; braking distance
If you are going twice as fast, will your stopping distance increase by two or four times?
Four times greater
Empty trucks have the best braking? True or False
False. Heavy trucks have better traction
What is hydroplaning?
Tire rides on the surface of the water breaking contact with the pavement.
What is black ice?
a thin clear layer of ice that you can see the road through it.
How to signal drivers behind you as to trouble ahead.
Flash your brake lights several times
How to alert drivers that you intend to drive slowly.
Turn on your emergency flashers
If you stop on the shoulder or the road, you must put out your emergency warning device, within what time frame?
10 minutes
Where to put emergency reflectors on an undivided highway or a two lane road.
100’ ahead of the vehicle
10’ and 100’ behind the vehicle
What is your total stopping distance?
perception distance + reaction distance + braking distance = total stoping distance
How do you determine how many seconds of following distance space you have?
One second for every 10’ of vehicle length under 40 mph. Add another second for speeds above 40 mph.
If you are driving a 30 foot vehicle at 55 mph, how many seconds of following distance should you allow?
4 seconds
You should decrease your following distance if somebody is following you too closely. True or False?
False. You should increase your following distance if someone is tailgating. This will allow for slower changes to speed if traffic is slowing.
If you swing wide to the left before turning right, another driver may try to pass you on the right. True or False
True
What is a hazard?
Any road condition or any other road user.
Why make emergency plans when you see a hazard?
increases your reaction time.
What is the most important space surrounding the vehicle?
The space ahead
What are some tips to follow so you don’t become a distracted driver?
Turn off cell phones. Clear vehicle of all unsecured items. No texting. Review maps or GPS before starting out. No smoking or eating while operating.
How do you use in-vehicle communications equipment cautiously?
?
How do you recognize a distracted driver?
Drifting. Inconsistent speeds. Preoccupied with maps, food, or smoking.
What is the difference between aggressive driving and road rage?
Aggressive driving is being selfish, bold or push. Road rage is using a vehicle with the intent of doing harm.
What should you do if you encounter an aggressive driver?
Get out of their way. Do not challenge them. Avoid eye contact. Ignore gestures.
What are some things you can do to reduce your stress before and while you drive?
Be realistic about travel time. Give driving your full attention. Slow down.
You should use low beams whenever you can?
False. Use your high beams whenever you can.
What should you do before you drive if you are drowsy?
Stop at the nearest safe place
What effects can wet brakes cause? How can you avoid these problems?
Can cause brakes to be weak. To apply unevenly or to grab. Can cause wheel lock ups and pulling to one side.. Avoid by no driving through standing water. If you do go through with light brake pressure. This presses linings against the drums keeping out water and mud.
You should let air out of hot tires so the pressure goes back to normal. True or False?
False. Tire pressure would be low once the tire cools off.
You can safely remove the radiator cap as long as the engine isn’t overheated. True or False?
False. Wait for the engine to cool before removing the cap.
What factors determine your selection of a safe speed when going down a long, steep downgrade?
Total weight of the vehicle and cargo length of the grade Steepness of the grade Road conditions Weather
Why should you be in the proper gear before starting down a hill?
Because if you come out of that gear you may not be able to get into any other gear.
Describe the proper braking technique when going down a long, steep downgrade.
Apply brakes just hard enough to feel a definite slowdown. Slowdown to about 5 mph below your safe speed and repeat.
What type of vehicles can get stuck on a railroad-highway crossing.
Low slung units. Low-boys, car carrier, moving van, possum-belly, Live stock trailer.
How long does it take for a typical tractor-trailer unit to clear a double track?
15 seconds
