Missing Persons/SIDS Weeks9,10,11,12 Flashcards
Missing persons/SIDS:
The role of specialist units (Missing Persons):
Contrary to mainstream public belief, there is no minimum time to wait before an MP report can
be taken. If a family member or loved one comes to report an MP, they should not be turned away.
If the definition for a missing person is met, then the report must be taken.
Although MP cases can vary enormously there are three major stages that apply to each:
- Initial Reporting (Gather details, event, risk assessment, offer referral to services).
- Investigation (Upload photo, permission to release photo to media, KLO4).
- Finalisation (Located or found deceased)
If foul play is suspected, then the Homicide Squad/State Crime Command is to be notified immediately.
Contact Missing Persons unit for advice/resources.
SIDS related incidents (Sudden Infant death syndrome):
There are specific operational requirements you must comply with when dealing with a SIDS
incident. Evidence must be preserved in order to ensure an appropriate investigation can be
undertaken.
Common features of SIDS:
• The age of the infant is between two weeks and two years.
• The child has been in previous good health.
• There may be the presence of a bloody froth around the mouth and nose.
• The skin may be discoloured and resemble bruising due to lividity.

• Death occurs during sleep.
Direct the following queries to a person familiar with the infant’s background.
