Miscibility and solutions Flashcards
homogenous mixture
a mixture of 2 or more chemical substance where the different components can’t be visually distinguished
heterogenous mixture
a mixture of 2 or more chemical substances where the different components can be visually distinguished and easily separated by physical means
solvent
the substance in which another substance dissolves to form a solution
solute
the substance being dissolved
miscibility
liquids which can be mixed together to form a single liquid
immiscible
when liquids do not mix
ionic/polar dissolves in
polar
non-polar dissolves in
non-polar
emulsifiers
another molecule is added that has both polar or ionic and non-polar components
surfactants
molecules that consist of a polar and a non-polar component
(e.g soap, detergent)
dissociation
water molecules bind to cations and anions forming secondary interaction : ion-dipole interactions
Hydration
water molecules surround the dissociated cations and anions, forming a hydration shell to keep the ions away from bonding again
Precipitate
an insoluble compound formed by the recombination anions and cations when solutions of ionic compounds are mixed
soap scum
water with high concentrations of Ca2+ or Mg2+ ions can result in the formation of soap scum(precipitate)
