Test for chlorine gas
test: Damp blue litmus paper
result: litmus paper will turn from blue to white(it has been bleached)
Test for halide ions
first if working with unknown solid dissolve in water
then dilute sample about to be tested with nitric acid to remove impurities
Then add silver nitrate(AgNO3)
A precipitate will be formed and its color depends on the ion in the substance
white for chloride Cl-1
cream for Bromide BR-1
yellow for iodide
then you can add conc ammonia (NHg)
chlorides’ and bromide’s precipitate will dissolve
While iodides won’t
test for water
1)add water to ANHYDROUS Copper(III) sulfate
It will change color from White to blue
2)Add ANHYDROUS Cobalt(II) chloride paper
The colour will change from Blue to pink
test for hydrogen
A lit splint will produce a squeaky pop when close enough to hydrogen
Test for oxygen
A glowing splint will be reignited in the presence of oxygen
test for alkaine nature of a substance
- red litmus will turn blu and blue litmas will stay blue
- methyl orange will turn orange
- phenolphalien will turn purple
