Miscellaneous Pathology Flashcards
What are some of the few causes of INSTANT death?
Myocardial infarction
Embolism
Ruptured/dissecting aneurysm
Occlusion of the 4th ventricle
List the 8 types of disease.
You should consider all of these in your differential diagnosis.
Infection Inflammation Vascular Metabolic Traumatic Neoplastic Iatrogenic Degenerative
How can a MI actually cause death?
Arrhythmias
Acute left ventricular failure
Cardiac rupture and haemopericardium
What are the 4 types of embolism you can get?
Thrombus
Air
Fat
Amniotic fluid
What are the two types of pneumonia? List 4 differences between them.
Lobar pneumonia
- Spreads through blood
- Confined to 1 lobe
- Grey hepatisation
- More severe
Bronchopneumonia
- Spreads through airways
- More diffuse
- Develops after chronic lung disease
- Often terminal for debilitated patients
What are the 2 types of meningitis? List 3 features of each.
Meningococcus
- Transmission: droplet inhalation
- Occurs in previously healthy people
- Rapid illness (<24 hours)
Pneumococcus
- Transmission: from lung infection
- More common in debilitated people
- Less rapid
What observations would you want to screen for sepsis?
Heart rate Resp rate BP Temperature O2 sats
What types of treatment are given for sepsis?
ABCs (airway, breathing, circulation etc.)
Fluid replacement
Observation
IV antibiotics
