Q

Right-to-try bill 2018

A

Would give terminally ill patients more opportunities to try experimental treatments.

Right-to-try movement argues that terminally ill patients should be given wide latitude to try out unproven treatments if they have exhausted all their other options.

Skeptics think the bill is unnecessary bc the FDA already does a good job of giving patients access to experimental treatments

Skeptics also argue that the bill exposes patients to more risk by removing federal oversight.

Under the bill’s guidelines, patients who wish to try treatment that has only cleared the first round of clinical trials no longer need the FDA’s approval. Still, patients must acquire consent from their doctor, drug company, and institution where treatment is taking place.

Based on the available data, the FDA already approves 90 percent or more of the requests it receives to try unproven therapies
