Miscellaneous Flashcards
What pressure indicators are on the knob of the Gleason pressure reducing valve?
Knob indicates 0-300
What is needed in order for the gleeson pressure reducing valve to operate?
Back pressure in the discharge line that is equal to the set pressure of the valve.
At what degree does a fire stream achieve it’s greatest horizontal reach?
30 degrees
How much more water can you get out of a 4” hydrant outlet than the 2.5” hydrant outlet?
Approximately 2 times as much
What is the rule of like lines?
First step is to obtain the static hydrant pressure.
If 1 line is placed into operation and the pressure does not drop more than 10% you are capable of flowing 3 like lines.
If not more than a 15% drop you can flow 2 like lines.
If between 16-25% you can only flow 1 additional like line.
What is the minimum depth required for drafting and how many feet under the surface of the water should the strainer be?
4 feet deep and 2 feet under the surface.
What knots should be tied on the hard suction for drafting?
A clove hitch is tied near the strainer on both sides of the male coupling. Then tie a running bowline on the first coupling above the strainer end.
When drafting, what position should the transfer valve be placed in?
Volume
Where is most of the energy of water hammer absorbed?
In the hoselines
How shall the Gleason valve be lubricated?
Apply 4-5 drops on engine oil to the piston
According to the AOTM, the 4” outlet on a hydrant provides how much more water than the 2.5”
Twice as much
What should you do if a PARTIAL failure occurs in your soft suction?
Continue for as long as possible
Hose laid zig zag can increase friction loss by how much?
5%
