Miscellaneous Flashcards
What effect does hypercalcemia have on the membrane potential?
raises threshold for action potential and decreases excitability
(Ca++ binds to negatively charged proteins making cell think it is more positive than it actually is)
Effect of hypocalcemia on membrane potential?
increases excitability and lowers threshold for action potential
Does hyperventilation cause increased or decreased neuronal membrane excitability?
INCREASED
blow off more acid –> lower Ca++
Does hypoventilation cause increased or decreased neuronal membrane excitability?
decreased
accumulate more CO2 –> higher Ca++
What role does calcium play in neurotransmission?
It enters the cell once its channels are voltage activated and it facilitates binding of the vesicles to the membrane for neurotransmitter release
True or false: Hypercalcemia has the opposite effect of hyperkalemia on resting membrane potential?
False (hypercalcemia –> decreases membrane excitability as does hyperkalemia)
What kind of muscle is NOT controlled by the ANS?
skeletal
