Bell’s Palsy

A

Acute facial nerve (CN VII) paralysis
Affects FULL hemi-face (forehead and lower face)
— brainstem spares forehead, often affects other CN’s too
Facial muscle weakness, unable to close eye, hyperascusis (stapedius muscle paralysis), loss of taste (anterior ⅔ tongue)
Cause: viral illness, Lyme dz, AOM, HSV (Ramsay Hunt syndrome)
Tx: consider steroids, acyclovir; corneal lubrication

muscle pain and weakness
mostly calves (gastrocnemius)
virus directly invades muscle
usu after Influ A/B, can be parainflu or adeno
self-limited
