Misc Flashcards
Segmentation
Data divided into smaller parts during transmission
Three elements of communication:
Sender, receiver, channel (medium or pathway)
Benefits of segmentation
Increase reliability of network communications
Multiplexing: interleaving pieces of separate conversations together on the network
Components of a network
Devices, media, services and processes
End device is…
Sender or receiver
Aka hosts
Ex. Pc, server, VoIP, mobile devices, security cameras
Distinguished by ip addresses
Intermediary devices
Ex: router, switch, firewall, hub
Directs data path
Network media
Is communication carried across a medium
Criterion for choosing network medium
Distance the medium can carry a signal
Environment in which it is installed
Cost and installation of media
LAN
Spans single geographical area; ex: single business, campus, region
Wan
Via a telecommunications service provider network; connect LAN in geographically separate locations.
Intranet
A private connection of LAN and WANs that belong to an organization; only accessible by members, employees, others with authorization
NIC
Provides physical connection to the network
Interface
Specialized ports on an internet working device that connects to individual networks.
Protocol suite
A group of interrelated protocols that are necessary to perform a communication function; technology ondependent
Osi model
Primary reference model for network communications
Network access layer
Consists of data link and physical layers of osi model
Protocol data units
Data is application Segment is transport layer Packet is network layer Frame is data link Bits or signals is physical
Data encapsulation process
Build data, segment data, put segments into packets, encapsulate into frames, convert into signals
Then, reverse process towards destination
Addressing in the network
Upper layers: encoded app data
Transport layer: port numbers (specific process)
Network layer: IP address (routers, different networks.)
Data link: MAC address
Physical: signals, header of layer 2
Protocols must:
Match on source and destination hosts
