Chart Guidelines
- One message per chart
- Label X and Y axis, lines, bars, pie wedges
- Make the most. imp. text largest and most imp. sections darkest
- Bars and Columns wider than spaces between
- Be accurate, compare only like variables
- Eliminate unnecessary deets like grid lines, data points, etc.
- Use max. 4 colours per visual
Bar Charts
Emphasizes the comparison between items at a fixed period of time, also includes cylinder, cone and pyramid sub-types
Column Charts
Emphasizes variations over a period of time, also includes cylinder, cone and pyramid subtypes
Line Charts
Relationship of the changes in the data over a period of time
Pie Charts
One chart data series, shows the relationship of the parts to the whole
Area Charts
Shows the relative importance of values over time
XY (Scatter) Charts
Useful for showing a correlation among the data points that may not be easy to see from the data alone
