Guidelines for sketching a curve

A

1) Domain
2) Intercepts
3) Symmetry (even, odd, periodic)
4) Asymptotes (horizontal by limits, vertical by domain)
5) Intervals of increase and decrease (first derivative)
6) Local maximum and minimum values (find the critical numbers of f(x) by f’(x)=0 or f’(x)=DNE, then use the first derivative test to see if it’s max or min)
7) Concavity and Points of Inflection (Compute 2nd derivative and use the Concavity Test. Inflection points occur where the direction of concavity changes.)
