Q

When to use QUI and QUE
When to use CE QUI and CE QUE

A

Both CE Qui and CE Que mean That or That Which

If it refers to a noun (expressed before), then you will use “que/qui”.
If it refers to the whole part of the sentence, the whole idea, then it will be “ce que/ce qui”

Ce Qui is used to replace the SUBJECT of the verb

  • tu vois ce qui tombe? (There is no subject, so CE is used in place of saying. You see something who/that is falling?)
  • ce sont les feuilles qui sont jaunes. (Les feuilles is the subject, so CE is not needed)

Ce Que is used to replace the OBJECT of the verb

  • ce sont les roses que j’ai reçus.
In this sentence, que denotes the object “les roses”, whereas ce que is used to indicate an entire idea.
  • ce n’est pas ce que j’ai commandé.

Gérondif allows us to say WHILE in front of any verb. Ex) … en mangeant = while eating

Rule = add ANT after the verb’s ROOT

All verbs follow this rule except for these 3: Être, Avoir, Savoir.
Être = en étant = while being. (Question for VC: this doesn’t look like an exception, because ét is the ‘root’ for être???)
Avoir = en ayant = while having
Savoir = en sachant = while knowing
