Minuchin article Flashcards
minuchin’s belief on constructivism
Minuchin was watching sessions where he felt as though people were portraying the idea that family therapy does not require working with the family
He believed the idea of constructivism was powerful in that people are able to construct their own ideas of reality
-However, he was concerned about how these statements impacted family therapy; also concerned how narrative therapy was dealing with the relationship of family members
minuchin’s belief in narrative therapy
Also discussed the idea in narrative therapy that therapists are really trying to not impose their beliefs or what they think onto the family
-However this minimizes therapists’ expertise and decreases attention to the problematic interactional patterns
-Also minimizes the direct influence of the therapist in the therapeutic process
argument against multicultural political stance
-Also stated a multicultural political stance was theoretically questionable, once again ignoring the problematic patterns that occur
-summary of minuchin article
Summary: the current theories are positive because they focus on multiple perspectives, try to not give therapist too much power, and trying to alter a person’s perspective
-However, they are ignoring interactions among family members, therapist’s knowledge, how the therapist impacts the session, and the idea that no matter what the therapist will have bias
