What is a stable coalition
One parent+one child form an inflexible alliance against another parent
What is an unstable coalition?
TRIANGULATION
Each parent demands that the child SIDE with him or her
What is a detouring-attack coalition?
Parents avoid conflicts between them and BLAME the child
What is a detouring-support coalition?
Avoid their own conflict by OVERPROTECTING the child
What is the primary goal of structural family therapy?
Alleviate current symptoms + change the family structure by ALTERING coalitions and creating clear Boundaries
How do you promote behaviour change?
A) JOINING
Mimesis : adoption family’s affective, behavioural and communication style
Tracking: adopting content of the family’s communications
Maintenance: providing family members with support
B) therapist evaluated family structure and makes structural diagnosis and identify appropriate interventions
C) reframing, unbalancing, boundary making, enactment
What is FAMILY map
Depicts family subsystem, boundaries and other aspects of family structure
What is reframing
Relabelling a problematic behaviour so it can be viewed in a more constructive way
What is boundary making
Alter the degree of proximity between family members
What is unbalancing?
Alter hierarchical relationship and occurs when the therapist aligns with a family members who’s lever of power needs to be increased
What is enactment
Asking family members to rôle oh a problematic interaction
Therapist can encourage family members to interact in an alternative way
