Minority influence Flashcards
minority influence
minority of people persuade others to adopt their beliefs attitudes or behaviours, leads to internalisation or conversion
consistency
minority influence is most effective of minority keeps the same beliefs both over time between all the individuals that form the minority
commitment
minority influence is more powerful if the minority demonstrates dedication to their position for example making personal sacrifices
flexibility
minority influence is more effective if the minority show flexibility by accepting the possibility of compromise
the process of change
factors make majority think more deeply about issue, snowball effect- minority view gathers momentum until it becomes majority influence
research support for consistency
Mscovici showed that a consistent minority opinion had a greater effect on other people than an inconsistent opinion
-Wood (1994)- carried out a meta analysis of almost 100 similar studies and found that minorities who were seen as being consistent were most influential
research support for depth of thought
minority views have longer effect because that are deeply processed- Martin (2003)
artificial tasks
tasks in studies are often trivial so tell us little about real life influence
limited real world applications
real life social situations are much more complicated
