Minority influence Flashcards
Define minority influence:
A form of social influence in which a minority of people persuade others to adopt their beliefs/attitudes.
Affect of Consistency on MI
Consistent approach = people consider issue more carefully
affect of Flexibility on MI
they must negate their position with the majority - be able to compromise else people won’t want to agree
Affects of Commitment on MI
Commitment means the approach becomes more difficult to ignore. To join the minority, people need to know its serious nature
Moscovici’s Slide Study Procedure:
Female ppts were shown 36 slides and asked ab the colour. 2 confeds and four ppts
Moscovici’s Slide study results:
2 parts:
1) the 2 confeds answered green for all 36 slides.
2) They answered 24 green and 12 blue - inconsistent
Moscovici’ Slide Study Conclusion:
Confeds being consistent = 8% of ppts answered green
When confeds were inconsistent = 1% of ppts said green
Confeds were in minority but their views influenced ppts
Negative eval Moscovici: (eco)
Lacked ecological validity as it was a lab experiment. Can’t generalise
Negative Eval Moscovici (stimuli)
Artificial stimuli. Situation was not a normal activity
Negative Eval (gender)
Cant generalise as only women were used
Positive eval (control group)
Had a control group, means we know the ppts were influenced rather than being unsure of the slide colour
Positive Eval (similar experiment)
Ppts wrote down the colour rather than saying it. Even more agreed with the minority, shows support for MI
