Minor Volcanic Forms Flashcards
1
Q
Solfatara
A
Small volcanic areas without cones, produced by gases (mainly sulphurous) escaping to the surface e.g. Bay of Naples in Italy
2
Q
Geysers
A
Occur when water heated by volcanic activity, explodes onto the surface e.g. Old Faithful, Yellowstone National Park, USA
3
Q
Hot springs/boiling mud
A
Sometimes the water does not explode into the surface. If this mixes with surface deposits, boiling mud is formed e.g. Very common in Iceland.
4
Q
Intrusive and extrusive volcanic activity in the U.K.
A
- granites and intruded rocks occur
- dykes and sills are common
- basaltic flows
- a volcanic plug from a long extinct volcano forms the site of Edinburgh
