Minor Scales Flashcards
Flat
Lowers a tone one half step
Sharp
Raise a tone one half step
Double Sharp
Used to sharp a tone already sharped
Double flat
Used to flat a tone already flatted
Effects of an accidental
Affects all the notes on the same line or space, in the same measure only, unless cancelled
Enharmonic Notes
Notes which have more than one name, but have the same sound. Every piano key expect for G# has 3 names
C major
0 sharps, a minor
G sharp
1 sharp, e minor
D major
2 sharps, b minor
A major
3#, f# minor

Sharp minor scales
a, e, b, f#, c#, g#, d#, a#
Flat minor scales
a, d, g, c, f, bb, eb, ab
Sharp keys
F, C, G, D, A, E, B
Flat keys
B, E, A, D, G, C, F
Natural, Normal, Or Pure form of the minor scale
Uses only white keys
Half steps come between degrees 2 and 3, 5 and 6
The remaining scale steps are whole steps
Harmonic Minor form
Made by raising the 7th degree a half step
Half steps come between degrees 2 and 3, 5 and 6, 7 and 8
Interval between 6 and 7 is an Augmented 2nd(step and a half)
Remaining scale steps are whole steps
Melodic minor form
Made by raising both 6 and 7 ascending, using natural descending
Half steps ascending come between degrees 2 and 3, 7 and 8
Remaining scale steps are whole steps
Relative Major and Minor scales
Scales that have the same key signature but different names
Given the major, count down a Minor 3rd to find the relative minor
Given the Minor, count up a Minor 3rd to find the Relative Major
Homotonic or Parallel Major and Minor Scales
Scales that have the same names but different key signatures
The 3 Flat Major Scales with no Homotonic Minor Scales of the same name
There are no flat signatures of more than 7 flats, so it is necessary to think and play the enharmonic scales
Db major- c# minor
Gb Major- f# minor
Cb Major- b minor
The 3 Sharp Minor Scales with no Homotonic Major Scales of the same name
g# Minor- Ab Major
d# Minor- Eb Major
a# Minor- Bb Major
Name all of the Minor scales which have exactly the same finger patterns as their Homotonic Major Scales

Natural Minor Scales, having all black keys(bb, eb, ab, a#, d#, g#) uses fingers
2 3 4 for 3-black-key groups
2 3 for two-black-key groups
Thumbs on all white keys
bb(a#) and eb(d#0 have the same fingering in all forms
ab(g#) requires alteration in the Harmonic and Melodic forms, left hand
