nationalist parties look to maintain a shared cultural identity and language of a certain geographical area

SNP- scotland nation
some want full independence, others just want better investment and recognition for their area

BNP- although it’s different in that it campaigns to support a way of life and values it claims are common to the people in the UK

SIP’s offer a wide range of policies which are based around an ideological perspective

what do minor parties sometimes cause
can blur the boundary between political parties and pressure groups as their primary goal is to raise awareness as opposed to winning elections
how do minor parties influence the 3 major parties
- plaid cymru’s manifesto - protect the vulnerable
- same as labour as they pledge to improve the nhs and invest more money into public service - snp’s manifesto- scrap nuclear weapons

trident, uk’s main source of nuclear weapons - ukip- withdrawal from eu
- same as conservative approach to brexit as they wanted out of eu via brexit
advantages regarding voter choice
- smaller parties tend to be more representative of minorities that don’t feel represented by the two main parties
- smaller parties give more voter choice
