Mining for resources Flashcards
first lecture
Where
Where are metals found naturally?
Most metals are found as types or rock int he Earths crust.
The earths crust is the outer most layer of a terrestial planet.
How
How do we get metals we need?
The method used to extract a given metal from its ore depends upon the reactivity of the metal so how stable the ore is. This process of separating is called extraction.
Define, example
Define metal ore? give two examples of ores.
Metal ores are all the materials which are removed from the mine for the purpose of extracting the desired metal(s)
chalcocite, malachite
Explain
explain the formation of ionic bonds?
Ionic bonds occure betwwen metals, losing electrons, and nonmetals gaining electrons.
Ionic bonds are strong bonds formed when electrons are transferred from element to another.
What
What are Ionic Compounds and how they are formed?
In chemistry, an ionic compound is a chemical compound composed of ions held together by electrostatic forces termed ionic bonding. The compound is neutral overall, but consists of positively charged ions called cations and negatively charged ions called anions.
caculations
Calculate the percentage composition – the percentage by mass of each element in a compound. Try formula for iron oxide (Fe203)
Mass of iron on periodic table is 55.8.
Mass of oxygen on periodic table is 16.0.
Therefore: mass of compound is (55.8x2) + (16.0x3) = 159.6.
Therefore, the percentage of iron in iron oxide is:
( (55.8x2) / 159.6 ) x 100 = 70%
Distinguish
- Distinguish between anions and cations
Cations are positively charged Ions whilst Anions are negatively charged Ions.
- Recall the types of ions formed by metals and non-metals
Cations, postively charged
Anions, negatively charged
metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions ( cations. Most cations are formed from metals.) non-metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions ( anions. Most anions are formed from non-metals.)
