Q

concentration factor

A

measure of a metal’s concentration necessary for profitable mining

it is how many times that average crustal concentration of a metal must be increased to be mined at a profit

Q

resource vs reserve

A

a resource is a source of raw material used by society (ie minerals, coal, trees, water); reserves are the discovered deposits of a resource that can be profitably extracted at current market prices.

Q

mineral deposits (hydrothermal, plutonic, placer, evaporates

A

stableminerals at the earth’s surface weather from the original rock and areconcentrated in stream and shoreline deposits during the transport anddepositional process

Q

formation and uses of coal

A

decay of tiny marine organisms that accumualted on the bottom of the ocean millions of years ago then remains were burried by sediements and heated until they became complex with energy, molecules migrated into rocks that contain them heating and transportion
80% depleted by 2050-2100

Q

nuclear energy – advantages and problems

A

PROS: it does not emit GHGs, does not consume fossil fuels, clean burning fuel that provides energy using less than what we would use when using fossil fuels, and a small amount of matter creates a large amount of energy

CONS: very expensive to build the waste products are dangerous and can cause a lot of damage if it is not contained properly, the fuel is very radioactive and needs to be stored for many years after use
