mini test before summer exam Y8 Flashcards
What is Digestion?
Taking in large insoluble substances and making them small and soluble
What is ingestion?
The taking in of substances
What is Mechanical Digestion?
The breaking down of food to smaller pieces without chemically changing the food molecules
What is Chemical Digestion?
The breaking down of food to smaller pieces using enzymes
What is Absorption?
The movement of food molecules/ions through the wall of the intestine to the blood
What is Egestion?
The releasing of food that has not been digested/absorbed through the anus as faeces
Why do we need to carry out digestion?
To take the nutrients from our food and turn them into a form our body can use
What does the mouth do?
Where mechanical digestion take places, teeth chew food to break to smaller pieces
What does the oesophagus do?
tube connecting mouth to stomach, contractions push down food
What does the stomach do?
Food mechanically digested by enzymes and churning, hydrochloric acid kills bacteria and produce required PH
What does the small intestine do? 2 parts?
PARTS:
1. Duodenum
2. Ileum Finishes food being digested with enzymes, absorption takes place using villi
What does the large intestine do?
Absorbs water from the remaining food, produce faeces
What does the pancreas do?
Produces protease, amylase, lipase enzymes as alkaline fluid
What does the liver do?
Produce bile and mix fats
What does the gall bladder do?
Stores bile to release in duodenum
