What’s the function of The Articulated Stern Crane?

A

Moves sweep gear & assists in launch & recovery during sweeping evolutions. It has a maximum reach of 22 ft. 6 in., a minimum reach of 3 ft., & a safe working load of 6,000 lbs. The whip wire is 70 ft. long & made of 5/8” wire.

What’s the function of Wedge Stops?

A

Consist of a three-piece construction & are interchangeable for either right or left handlay sweep wire. They are required for cutter placement & securing equipment on the sweep wire. They ensure the cutters stay in place on the sweep wire.

A

Is used to stream, tow, & recover sweep gear. It consists of three drums that house both sweep & depressor wires. A winch brake system operates off of a ship’s hydraulic system & maintains sweep wires under tension without the use of additional equipment.

A

Is constructed of non-magnetic stainless steel wire. Port Sweep Wire is left-hand lay & Starboard Sweep Wire is right-hand lay. Both Sweep Wires are 5/8 in., 7x7 wire, 4,000 ft. long.

A

Is used to indicate whether a port or starboard sweep is being conducted. It is a 33 in. red & black flag for daylight operations. A black stripe on top indicates a starboard sweep & a red stripe on top indicates a port sweep. The flag staff is 9 ft. long, made of non-magnetic steel, & has a battery operated Xenon flasher attached to the top for night operations.

What is the purpose of the Float Pendant?

A

Connects the float bail to the otter bridle to control the depth of the outboard end of the sweep. It is non-magnetic, 5/16 in., right-hand lay, with a thimble in each end. Pendants are made up of 5, 10, 20, 30, 60, & 100 ft. lengths.

What are the Protective Clothing?

A

Phone talkers on the inter-ship phone shall not fasten their neck straps.
All personnel working on the fantail shall wear MK 1 vest type life preservers.
Personnel assigned to the sweep detail working on the fantail shall wear approved safety shoes (ANSI Z41.1).

What are the Personal Dress?

A

Avoid wearing loose clothing that may catch in the gear. Long-sleeve shirts must be buttoned & pants must be tucked into socks.
Remove all jewelry, wristwatches, and keys.
Authorized personnel may carry an appropriate knife & a small marlinespike for routine work & for use in an emergency.

To reduce the danger of electric shock and other hazards, what safety precautions do you adhere to?

A

Keep clear of the fantail & magnetic power cables when the gear is being pulsed.
Inspect all power cables upon their recovery following each normal streaming & after a known or suspected grounding or collision.
Correct all defects before the cables are reused.
When the cables are stowed on the reel, wrap all grips on the cables with two or more layers of heavy canvas secured with marlin, remove all shackles from the bridle, and position the preventer pendant shackles as flat as possible against the cables.

When a man overboard happens on ship what following measures are taken?

A

Instruct the victim to swim toward the sweep gear, which provides, in effect, a ready-made life raft.
Warn the victim to approach the gear with caution, to prevent mine explosion.
Drop a life buoy.
Send a minesweeper (without gear streamed), a service or utility craft, or a mine destruction or recovery ship, to assist the victim.
Sound six short blast’s on the ship’s whistle.
Report, as rapidly as possible, to the OIC & to the ships in formation.
By day, hoist the OSCAR flag where it can best be seen. By night, display Two Pulsating Red Lights arranged vertically, & fire one white flare.
