Minerals and Rocks Flashcards
Mineral
Naturally Occuring, usually inorganic solid that has a definite crystalline structure and chemical composition.
Crystal
Solid, geometric form that results from a repeating pattern of atoms of molecules.
Matter
Anything that has volume and mass
Bonus: What is the equation for density?
Mass over volume :)
What are things scientists use to define minerals?
Color, streak, luster, cleavage, and fracture
What is weathering?
The process by which water, wind, ice, and changes in temperature break down rock.
What is erosion?
The process by which sediment is moved from one place to another.
What is deposition?
The process by which sediment comes to rest.
What are the classes of rock?
Igneous rock, sedimentary rock, and metamorphic rock.
Classes of igneous rock?
Intrusive, and extrusive.
Classes of sedimentary rock?
Clastic, chemical, and organic.
Classes of metamorphic rock?
Foliated and nonfoliated.
How does igneous rock from?
Igneous rock forms from cooling lava and magma.
How does sedimentary rock form?
Sedimentary rock is formed when the weight from above presses down on the layers of minerals of sediment, of when minerals dissolved in water solidify and cement them together.
How does metamorphic rock form?
It forms when high temperatures and pressure change the texture and mineral content of a rock.
