What is adolescence?
Adolescence is a lifestage between the ages of 9-18 years of age.
What is puberty?
young people experience a period of change. This starts when the brain releases chemicals called HORMONES
Reaching new heights
A young person’s height can increase rapidly over a short period of time. This is known as a growth spurt

- penis enlarges
- prostate gland produces secretions
- testes enlarge + produces sperm

- Growth of facial hair
- Increased muscle + strength
- Voice box grows so it becomes deep
Females primary sexual characteristics
- uterus and vagina grow
- ovulation and menstrual periods begin
Females secondary sexual characteristics
- Enlargement of breasts
- Growth of armpits/ pubic hair
- Increased fat layers under the skin
Primary sexual characteristics
During puberty, hormones cause the sexual and reproduced organs to mature
Secondary sexual characteristics
They arrive during puberty. They are caused by changes to the height and shape and body distinguish the 2 sexes
