mind and the brain- week 1 fundamental concepts in neuroanatomy Flashcards
Explain the forebrain division of the brain?
Locate each one on the brain
The forebrain is often subdivided into the telencephalon and the diencephalon.
The telencephalon contains structures such as the cerebral cortex, limbic system and basal ganglia
The diencephalon contains the thalamus and hypothalamus
Explain the midbrain and hindbrain division of the brain
Locate each one on the brain
The midbrain is the location of 2 pairs of colliculi- the superior colliculi and the inferior colliculi
The hindbrain contains structures such as the medulla, pons, cerebellum and the reticular formation
What is involved in the Central Nervous System and what is involved in the Peripheral nervous sytem
CNS- Brain and Spinal Cord
PNS- All parts outside spinal cord and brain
Explain the neuroanatomical terms of Tracts and Nuclei?
Tracts- (bundles of axons in the CNS (white matter) vs nerves (bundles of axons in the PNS)
Nuclei- (groups of neuron cell bodies in the CNS (grey matter) vs ganglia (groups of neuron cell bodies in the PNS)
Explain the sagittal plane, coronal and horizontal view
Sagittal/ longitude- divides the body into left and right body parts. The plane may be in the middle of the body and split into two halves (mid sagittal)
Coronal- Divides the brain into anterior and posterior portion
Horizontal- Divides body into superior and inferior planes
What does the neural tube grow into? What does the neural crest develop into?
Neural tube- grow to form the central nervous system
Neural crest- Develop into the peripheral nervous system
The developing neural tube begins to form discrete enlargements or vesicles. These embryonic vesicles will develop into the major regions of the brain: forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain
