Mind and Body: Non-reductive Materialism Flashcards
what is the major claim of none reductive materialism?
the mind is physical and so the mind and body are one.
could be linked to property dualism
doesn’t reduce the mind to the physical as they are separate substances but but the mental phenomena supervenes the physical. therefore the mental is more important however it does rely upon the physical without being able to be reduced to it.
explain the Dartmoor example
as everything that exists is in some sense physical
from the reductive view the “wintriness” is reducible to the configuration of the pixels and is nothing more.
or
the wintriness of the image supervenes upon this arrangement of pixels and is nothing above or beyond the arrangement of the pixels but that the property of the wintriness is not reduce able.
something with a different arrangement of pixels would also hold the wintriness
what does supervenience mean?
cannot be a qualitative different between two things if they are exactly alike in physical respects.
Davidson’s idea
so we couldn’t change the wintriness of the image without changing the arrangement of the pixels.
a single event cannot chnage the mnetal and not the physical.
there cannot be an m-difference without a p-difference
