Milling Machines Flashcards
Milling machines use
Milling, drilling, boring and reaming
Milling machine process description
A blend of the vertical spindle of the drill press with the longitudinal and transverse movements of the milling machine with the ability to machine in one, two or three planes
Operations of the milling machine
Face milling, gear cutting, end milling, keyway cutting, boring and dovetail cutting
Ram type milling machine features
Two axis control, base of ribbed cast iron and column also cast with base
Automatic feed
An external device that controls longitudinal and cross fields of the table
Horizontal Milling Machine
A type of machine tool with a spindle parallel to the work table
Horizontal milling machine use
To process various planes, inclined planes, disc cutters, angle cutters, forming cutters and mills
Factors that affect the efficiency of a milling operation
Cutting speed, feed and depth of cut
Cutting speed
Measured in surface feet per minute
Factors to determine Cutting speed
Type of work material, cutter material, diameter of cutter and depth of cut taken
Milling Machine Feed
Distance per minute that work moves into cutter
Feed
Rate work moves into revolving cutter
Milling feed
Determined by multiplying chip size desired, number of teeth in cutter and r/min of cutter
Chip per tooth
Amount of material that should be removed by each tooth of the cutter
Factors that influence feed rate
Depth and width of cut, design/type of cutter, sharpness of cutter ans workpiece material
Ideal rate of feed
Work advances into cutter, each successive tooth advances into work equal amount
Feed (equation)
Feed= NxCPTx(r/min)
Direction of feed (convention)
Feed work against rotation direction of cutter
Depth of cut requirements
Deep at least 0.015 inches and feed should be reduced instead of speeding up the cutter
Common Milling machine operations
Open and closed pockets, peripheral end milling, chamfering and facing operations for small areas
Milling machine accessories
Arbors, shell-end mill arbors, collet adapters, quick-change adapter and vises
Collet adapters use
Used for mounting drills or other tapered-shank tools in main spindle of machine or vertical milling attachment
