• to reduce the amount of people living on US $1.25 a day

- to achieve full and productive employment, to provide decent work for all - inc. women and children

• lack of income leads to lack of resources and infrastructure
• lack of income also reduces the capability of a country to build their economy which reduces the level of human development experienced
