Describe the MDG initiative
- created by the UN, runs from 2000-2015
- has 8 goals which aims to reduce poverty, each goal has targets which is measurable
List the 8 MDG
Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Achieve universal primary education
Promote gender equality and empower women
Reduce child mortality
Improve maternal health
Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Ensure environmental sustainability
Develop a global partnership for development
Purpose/Targets of Goal 1
- to reduce the amount of people living on US $1.25 a day
- to achieve full and productive employment, to provide decent work for all - inc. women and children
Why is goal 1 important?
- lack of income leads to lack of resources and infrastructure
- lack of income also reduces the capability of a country to build their economy which reduces the level of human development experienced
Improvements of goal 1
- the number of people living in extreme poverty has decreased
- the number of workers living on US$1.25 a day has also declined
Ongoing concerns of goal 1
- there is still a significant portion of the global population living in extreme poverty today
- the progress of proportion of workers living in extreme poverty has slowed
Purpose/Targets of Goal 2
- to ensure that all children, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary education
Importance of Goal 2
- education empowers women, which gives them higher paid employment
- also gives women the ability to take control of their lives and their families’ lives
Improvements of Goal 2
- gender equality has been achieved in the enrollment rates of boys and girls in primary education
Ongoing concerns of Goal 2
- there is still a significant portion in the developing region where children are not attending school
Purpose/Target of Goal 3
- ensure that all gender differences are accepted in all levels of education (primary, secondary, tertiary)
Importance of Goal 3
- education promotes gender equality prospects which could break the cycle of poverty
Improvements of Goal 3
- globally, gender equality has been achieved in the enrollment rates of boys and girls in primary education
Ongoing concerns of Goal 3
- not all countries in developing regions has equal rates of boys and girls in primary education
Purpose/Target of Goal 4
- reduce two/thirds of the U5MR between 1990-2015
