Russia likely prompted by the likelihood of Ukraine joining NATO – which would allow NATO troops access to ones of Russias most important front doors. the threat of this led Russia to annex the entire Crimean peninsula and strengthen its land border with Ukraine - by allowing its troops to encroach it.
