Because many countries will be afraid to challenge the US but will also try prove to the world that they are strong too by doing what they can.

If other countries were to challenge the US, they would have to rival the US spendings on their military, which would be nearly impossible.

Because NATO is a very powerful alliance which would back up the US in wars and also listen to them.
