To ensure that the Reconstruction policies were being enforced in the southern states.

What were the Reconstruction policies?
Policies which aimed to reconstruct America following the division of the US Civil War (e.g., The Freedman’s Bureau, The Civil Rights act of 1866 etc).
When were federal troops removed from the ex-Confederate states?
April 1877 - as part of the Compromise of 1877 - imposed during the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes.

What happened in 1866 at the Fetterman Massacre?
The members of the Cheyenne and Lakota Sioux were angered by the US military who were stationed on their lands. In retaliation the tribes attacked Captain William J. Fetterman’s troops in Dakota. The victorious Indians called the incident the battle of the ‘Hundred Soldier Killed.’ Whilst the US army called it the Fetterman Massacre.
What happened in 1876 at the Battle of Little Bighorn?
Defying the treaty of Fort Laramie (1868), in 1876 President Grant sent troops into the Great Sioux Reservation which inhabited over 20,000 Native Americans. The Native Americans were attacked and the treaty was reversed - a new document was produced granting the government the Black Hills and 22.8 million acres surrounding it. The US government threatened to remove government aid and food if they didn’t gain a signature - Red Cloud signed it eventually.
What happened in 1890 at the Battle at Wounded Knee Creek / Wounded Knee Massacre?
The US troops began fighting with the Lakota Sioux near Wounded Knee Creek. The US soldiers were armed with rifles and up to 300 Native American were killed - most being women and children.
