Milgram variations studies Flashcards
Why did Milgram conduct variation studies?
In order to see whether proximity of the experimenter made a difference on the level of obedience shown. Milgram made a series of experiments changing the relationship between teachers and
experimenter.
Telephonic instructions (experiment 7)
Milgram found that number of pps willing to give max 450 volts shock fell from 65% to 22.5% in experiment. He also observed that pps continued to administer lower shocks rather than increasing the volts, and even lied to the experimenter about it. However, as experimenter entered the room, this disobedience turned to obedience.
Run down office block (experiment 10)
Milgram relocated his study from Yale university to a run down office block in Bridgeport Connecticut. Milgram found a reduction in obedience of 48%
Ordinary man gives orders (experiment 13)
The role of the experimenter was played by an ordinary man. The variation was used to test the role of authority and status in obedience. 80% of people disobeyed.
