Milgram’s research Flashcards
What was the aim of the study?
To explore how far individuals would go in following orders by an authoritative figure, even if they lead to harming other people.
What method was used in the study?
Laboratory experiment.
What was the procedure of the study?
The participant took on the role of a teacher, and was instructed by an experimenter who took on the role of an authoritative figure, to administer electric shocks to a confederate who took on the role of a learner, whenever they answered a question incorrectly. The shocks were fake however the participants believed them to be real. Volts increased from 15 volts to 450 volts.
What were the results of the study?
A large number of participants continued to administer higher shocks even when the learner was in pain, begging to stop, or became unresponsive.
65% of the participants obeyed the experimenters instructions fully despite showing clear hesitation or stress.
What is the conclusion of the study?
People tend to obey authority figures even if it conflicts with their personal morals under the right circumstances.
