Milgram Evaluation Flashcards
1
Q
evaluate internal validity
A
- Orne and Holland argued that participants didn’t believe in the set up and this would have affected their behaviour.
- Gina Perry listened to tape of the participants and reported that many expressed doubts.
HOWEVER - Sheridan and King conducted a similar study using real shocks on a study. 54% of males and 100% of females obeyed.
Milgram himself reported that 70% if his participants said they believed the shocks were genuine.
2
Q
evaluate external validity.
A
- Though the set up seems artificial, the relationship between the participant and the researcher is true to life in terms of authority figures.
- Hofling studied nurses. 21 out of 22 nurses were willing to obey what they thought were doctor’s orders and give a patient orders despite it being against the rules.
SO MILGRAM’S FINDINGS MAY SHOW HOW OBEDIENCE OPERATES IN REAL LIFE
3
Q
Explain Le Jeu de la Mort.
A
French documentary about reality TV and includes a replication of Milgram’s study where people were told to give electric shocks to a person by the presenter.
80% went to maximum voltage and signs of stress were the same. MILGRAM’S FINDINGS WERE NOT A ONE-OFF OCCURENCE.
