Q

What was the method used?

A

Subject introduced to learner. Told the study was about punishment on learning.
Subject sees learner placed into chair. Learner explains he has heart condition. Experimenter says shocks are painful but no damage.
Teacher and experimenter return to room. Cant see the learner.
Teacher told the learner to learn word pairs and read out first word and another 4 words. Subject had to choose the right word.
Wrong word= electric shock, shock intensity increased every time the learner said a wrong answer.
No vocal protest. 300v pounding on the wall. 315v pounding then no response.

Q

What were the conclusions? Why was it so high?

A

Carried out at prestigious uni.
Believed the learner volunteered.
The learner believed the subject had signed a contract and was being paid.
Subject told the shocks werent harmful.
Situation entirely new so they had no previous guide to their behaviour.
No obvious point where the subject could stop due to there only being a small difference between each shock.
Subjects who did withdraw stopped at a natural break when the subject didnt reply.

Q

What were some issues with this study?

A

Learners voice is coming out of the speaker (may not be realistic)
The same shock level was pressed but the man is still screaming.
The learners cheque looked dodgy.

17
Q

What was a problem with the validity of the experiment?

A

No IV.

Behaviour may only be typical of a lab.

18
Q

What does Milgram argue about obedience?

A

Humans are innately obedient. It is part of our nature as social animals to obey authority figures.

19
Q

What are some ethical issues?

A

No informed consent
No protection from harm
Not very well debriefed

20
Q

What is cognitive dissonance?

A

The state of discomfort or anxiety caused by holding 2 opposing attitudes or beliefs about a situation.

21
Q

What are some problems with the sample?

A

All same ethnicity.

Equipment and materials used are specific to your own culture.

22
Q

What are some possible improvements?

A
Greater number of people
Questions on paper
Clearer option to leave
Properly debrief participants
Greater number of people
Stratified random sample.
