What was the background for Milgram?
wanted to investigate why we obey orders (WW2 and Nazis), and whether social or dispositional attributes effect it
What was the aim for Milgram ?
To measure how far participants obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts that conflicted with their personal morals.
What was the sample in Milgram?
40 males from Newhaven, aged 20-50
What was the sampling method in Milgram?
Volunteer sample through newspaper advert and direct mail, and paid $4.50 for coming
What was the methodology in Milgram?
controlled laboratory study
What was the procedure in Milgram?
-a fixed lottery showed which was the teacher and learner
-both were taken into another room where a 45v shock was given to the T
-the T then read out word pairs and L responded by pressing a button
-If the L got it wrong they were shocked
-the volts increase by 15v and would continue unless T needed a prod
-Study finished when teacher refused or when 450v was reached
-T was interviewed and debriefed at the end
What were the results from Milgram?
100% of ppts shocked to 300v
65% of ppts shocked to 450v
What were the conclusions from Milgram ?
Milgram concluded that people would obey authority when they feel like they aren’t responsible, even when this hurts another person
