Q

how did they convince participant’s shocks were real?

A

they watched the learner get strapped in to the chair and have the device attached to him they were also given a sample shock of 45 volts

Q

what was the first part of the procedure?

A

the participant’s were told the study was to see how punishment affected learning the participant met the accountant they drew for roles within the study the participant always got the part of the teacher. they were then taken into the lab and watched the leaner get strapped in the experimenter said “although shocks can be extremely painful they cause no permanent tissue damage “

Q

what was the paired associate learning task?

A

the teacher was asked to read out a list of word pairs (‘clear’ and ‘air ‘ as they matched together ) during the study the teacher read out a word with 4 possible answers the learner had to say which option was the one originally paired with the word

Q

what was found out in the pilot study?

A

it showed that it would take time for participants to get the procedure right. to help this they were given 10 words to read to the learner the learner would answer 3 right and 7 wrong this means they would be at 105 volts

Q

what was some feedback from the victim?

A

the learner was given a list of predetermined responses (3 wrong answers to every correct one)
the learner made no protest or comments until 300 volts where he would begin to pound on the wall he didn’t respond to questions
after that the teacher asked the experimenter what to do but they were told to wait 5-10 seconds then shock
at 315 volts the learner pounded on the wall again after there was no further responses

16
Q

how were participants debriefed?

A

all participant’s were interviewed after the study and asked some open questions they also has to complete some psychological test to ensure they would leave in a state of well being participant’s also meant with the learner so they could see they weren’t actually harmed

17
Q

what where the preliminary predictions?

A

14 undergraduates were described the situation and had to predict out of 100 hypothetical participants how many would go all they way to 450 volts they predicted only 3% would

18
Q

what were the quantitative data results?

A

5 participants (12.5%) stopped at 300 volts
26/40 (65%) went to 450 volts
35% stopped between 300 -435 volts

19
Q

what were the qualitative data?

A

many participants showed nervousness and extreme tension ‘tremble ,stutter ,bite their lips,’ some had nervous laughter and 3 had seizures

20
Q

what were the comments from participants?

A

‘I think he’s trying to communicate , he’s knocking … well its not fair to shock the guy … these are terrific volts I don’t think this is very humane I cant go on with this’
‘He’s banging in there I’m gonna chicken out id like to continue but I can’t do that to a man …im sorry I cant do that to a man ill hurt is heart you take your money
