Mild Steel Pipe Flashcards
What is mild steel pipe used for?
It is used for hot water heating systems and gas supplies
How would you identify mild steel pipe?
You identify mild steel pipe if it’s red black or galvanised.
Can it be used for mains water?
No because it would soon become liable too corrosion problems
How is it joined?
It can be joined n 3 ways welding threading or using victualic joints
Can you use galvanise for mains water? Why?
No because if fresh water is continuously being drawn off through the pipeline causing corrosion problems
What precautions should be taken place when galvanise welding?
Clear area of flamables
Work in a ventilated area
Don’t smoke around any weld
Name 3 grades of mild steel pipe??
Medium grade
Heavy grade
Schedule 40&80
What is medium grade suitable for?
Medium grade is suitable for low pressure hot water and heating systems and gas installations
What is heavy grade suitable for?
Heavy grade is suitable for high pressure hot water and heating installations and acetylene gas and steam installations.
Explain the term BSPT?
A BSPT is a British standard pipe thread. It is formed at the end of the pipe.
Is a BSPT tapered or not?
Yes it is a tapered thread which tightens as it screws together
What gap is left when welding a 1” piece?
A 3mm gap is left when welding a 1” piece
What flame is used when welding a 1”piece?
A neutral flame is used when welding a 1” piece
Where are victualic joints used?
Victaulic joints are used to fabricate fire systems or large bore cold distribution systems.
Why would you use a 3 wheel pipe cutters?
A 3 wheel pipe cutters would be used when a full revolution is not possible
