Sistine Chapel

Michelangelo from 1508-12 in Vatican City
- Commissioned by Pope Julius II
- It is estimated that the paintings cover almost 6000 square feet of the ceiling and upper side walls
- The paintings of the ceiling are all frescoes
- The Creation of Adam took aproximately 17 days to complete
- The Sistine Chapel was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984

II Tempietto
A
Bramante from 1502-10 in Montorio
- Commissioned by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella
- The sixteen columns on the building were taken from an unknown, ancient building
- Tempietto means little temple
- At the time, the spot where the temple was built is where it was believed that St. Peter was crucified
- The temple is built in the courtyard of the Church of San Pietro

Stella degna Segnatura

Raphael from 1510-11 in Rome
- Commissioned by Pope Julius II
- The walls of the apartment were named Poetry, Justice, Theology, and Philosophy
- The name for the Philosophy wall, School of Athens, first came up in the 18th century
- Stella degna Segnatura means ‘Room of the Signature’
- The cartoon for School of Athens was made up of 200 sheets of paper glued together

Christ’s Charge to Peter

Raphael and Pieter van Alst from 1515 in Rome
- Commissioned by Pope Leo X
- It painted with bodycolor on paper and then mounted on canvas
- The cartoon for the painting was made on a tapestry within Pieter’s workshop
- The tapestry is currently in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London
- The tapestries were originally for the Sistine Chapel

Entrance Hall of Laurentian Library
A
Michelangelo from 1524-60 in Florence
- Commissioned by Pope Clement VII
- The library is located inside the Church of San Lorenzo
- The purpose of the library was to house the Medicean collection of books and manuscripts
- Contains more than 11000 manuscripts and 4500 early printed books
- When Mike left Florence in 1534, Tribolo, Basari, and Ammannati continued to work on the library while following instructions from Mike

Last Judgement of Sistine Chapel

Michelangelo from 1536-41 in Vatican City
- Commissioned by Pope Paul III Farnese
- Mike spent 449 days painting the fresco
- One time, while painting the Last Judgement, Mike fell from the scaffolding thus injuring his leg
- Mike achieved the pigment of the blue sky by painting it with ground lapis lazuli
- The painting covers the whole altar wall of the Sistine Chapel
