donner party migration 1846

- 300 people & 60 wagons
- wagon train well equipped but had more women , elderly + children than normal
- fort bridger -> 80 people tried to take a shortcut
- 4 wagons broke , 300 cattle died & 1 man killed another
- arrived late in Sierra Nevada - trapped by snow
- food ran out & people began to de - they ate each other

why did Mormons migrate
A
- religious group that weekend persecuted for their belief in polygamy - forced to move from state to state but met opposition from other Christian’s everywhere they went
- 1845 - forced to leave Illinois after rioters murdered joseph smith

- 1846 - Mormons persecution in Illinois forced him + 1500 others to find land no one else wanted
- he split everyone imto groups w a leader
- gave everyone a specific role
- insisted on discipline & regular rest

- trail guides / explorers to find out about SLV
- gave everyone a role , strict discipline therefore no arguments

- lack of trees - little timber for fencing / building
- weather - thunderstorms + violent wind - destroy crops
- lack of water - deep wells has to be dug
