What is Migration?
Human migration is the movement of people from one place to another with the intentions of settling, permanently or temporarily at a new
location.
What is Immigration?
Immigration is the act of entering a foreign country to live
What is Emigration?
Emigration is the act of leaving a country to live in another
What is Rural?
Rural is the geographical region located in the outer parts of the cities or towns
What is Urban?
Urban is the area of a place towns and cities.
What is Internal Migration?
Internal Migration is a change of residence within national boundaries, such as between states or cities.
What is External/International migration
External/International migration refers to change of residence over national boundaries. An international migrant is someone who moves to a different country.
What is Forced Migration?
Forced migration also called displacements is when people
are made to leave their home. It is usually caused by violence, natural disaster or political reasons.
What is Voluntary migration?
Voluntary migration is where
the migrant has a choice whether or not to migrate.
What are some push factors of migration?
Few services
Lack of job opportunity
Unhappy life
Poor transport links
Natural disasters
Wars
Food shortages
What are some pull factors of migration?
Access to services
Better job opportunities
Entertainment facilities
Better transport links
Improved living conditions
Hope for better way of life
Family links
What are some positive consequences of migration?
New skills may be introduced which may be to the benefit of the labour force and the country as a whole
New cultures are introduced
There may be a more readily available labour force.
What are some negative consequences of migration?
Greater stress is placed on the resources and social services of the country
Citizens feel threatened in the receiving country, in terms of job opportunities, housing, etc. this may lead to the exploitation of workers and open violence against the newly arrived by those who do not wish to integrate.
Brain drain occur in the country of origin as a result of loss of mainly skilled and professional persons who migrate.
What are some problems that immigrants may face?
Loneliness
Language difficulties
Climate differences
Racial or religious discrimination
Problems adjusting to a totally new culture
