  • Problems in fishing - In the early 20th century. The fishing industries experienced a depression and people were forced to move for a better job.
  • The Potato Famine - Potato crops became infected and failed, most of the population relied on Potatoes and this forced people to move away.
  • The clearance - Landlords would force tenants out and replace them with farm animals to make a profit.

  • Improvements in transport - Sailing ship was main form of transport, travel time was reduced and the cost also decreased which made it affordable to travel.
  • Job Opportunities - Jobs overseas offered more money for the same jobs and there were many available jobs in various sections.
  • Assisted Passage - Many companies would give Scots the money they needed to travel over to a different country and start their new job and a new career opportunity.
