A

potato famine- majority of population relied on this crop but blight made it unable to eat
assisted passage- canada needed bigger population, paid to move and live there
fishing industry collapsed after ww1- no way to export to places like germany, fisherman could no longer work in scotland
highland clearances- people in highlands forcibly removed from homes and land belonging to family in order to make room for animals

A

opportunity to own land- canada was giving it away while scotland had very little available to buy
consolidation of land- left youngest of farmers generations with nowhere to go as land became smaller and smaller
decline in kelp industry meant lots of poverty and therefor people left in hope of a better life
great depression meant that heavily industrialized places struggled- shipbuilding and engineering became harder to find a job in at end of 1920s/30s
