0.5 million (estimate), cristieros, civil war
How many Mexicans fled to America during the 1810 Revolution?
1 million in order to escape violence and economic hardship.
Why did so many Mexicans move to America during the 1930s?
Great Depression, escape economic hardship, effect on Mexico, closely related to US economy, closely intertwined.
How did Americans react to the large influx of Mexicans arriving in the country during the 1930s and what was the result?
Repatriated many Mexicans back to Mexico to create jobs for Americans, created jobs they didn’t want to do, deportation acted out in a humiliating fashion.
Who were the Brasseros? How did Mexico protect the Brasseros? What was the result?
WWII labourers, filled spots left by draftees, agriculture and industry. Mexico and US had to negotiate to avoid similar treatment of Mexicans in the 1930s (minimum wage, social security, retirement, medical, working condition rights). Not all employers met conditions, US & Mexican government didn’t have the resources to monitor the situation at the time, still better than the 1930s conditions. Eventually Brasseros became US citizens, positive cooperation between US and Mexico.
What were the Zoot Suit Riots?
LA, WWII just broke out, many Mexicans in LA wouldn’t enlist, formed their own bilingual culture, dressed in zoot suits, held parties, resentment, Navy officers reacted and caused a riot, people killed, police arrested Mexicans & put several in jail instead of the naval personnel, showed that Mexicans were not treated equally.
