Citizens from this country were once encouraged to migrate to the U.S. Through the Bracero program. In more recent years concern over the flow of illegal immigrants has caused tension between the U.S. and this country. This flow has slowed in recent years due to a weakened U.S. economy, greater threats of deportation and decline in the country of origin’s lowered population.

The U.S. finally accepted them in only after a lawsuit which claimed discrimination. After a devastating earthquake in 2010 many refugees fled to the Dominican Republic.
