What is a refugee?
Person who crosses an international border and has a well-founded fear that they will be harmed if they return home.
What is an internally displaced person?
person who is forced to move from their homes but remain within the same country
What is an asylum seeker?
Person seeking protection from danger faced in origin country that is offered by destination country
What are push and pull factors - economic, social, political, environmental
Push:
Economic: lack of economic opportunities
Social: avoiding discrimination or persecution because ones racial, ethnic gender, or religious identity
Political: being at odds with ones government - face abuse, persecution, discrimination
Environmental: Escaping harm from natural disasters, drought, etc
Pull:
Economic: perceived prospect of economic opportunity
Social: safe havens away from persecution, areas more open to diversity
Political: safe havens away from persecution, perceived asylum-friendly or refugee-friendly destinations
Environmental: desirable areas away from manmade or physical hazards
What are intervening obstacles?
Barriers that make reaching desired destination more difficult
What are fears and benefits of migration?
Fears:
Perceived loss of national identity
Expensive burden to taxpayers
Take jobs away from citizens
Benefits:
Increase of cultural diversity
Immigrants work hard and pay taxes
Immigrants boost the economy and the working age population in aging societies. They also send remittances
What are remittances?
A sum of money sent in payment for goods or services or as a gift
