What Is the
Snow Family?
The Snow Family is a set of secure appliances that provide petabyte-scale data collection and processing solutions at the edge and migrate
large-scale data into and out of AWS. They offer built-in computing capabilities, enabling customers to run their operations in remote
locations that do not have data center access or reliable network connectivity.
Not being able to transfer over the internet, having a large amount of data,
or having a very slow internet connection could all be reasons to use Snowball.
The Snow Family works to get data into AWS, as well as shipped back to you.

What Is Storage
Gateway?
Storage Gateway is a hybrid cloud storage service that helps you merge on-premises resources with the cloud. It can help with a one-time migration or a long-term pairing of your architecture with AWS.
What is File Gateway?
File gateway bridges local file storage over NFS and SMB with S3 Storage.
It supports multi site, maintains storage structure, integrates with other AWS products and supports S3 object lifecycle Management.
- NFS or SMB mount
- NotifyWhenUploaded: Sends you notification through CloudWatch Events when all files written to your file share have been uploaded to Amazon S3(because the file is not seen uatimatically, without a file listing, when a file is added on S3).
What is Volume Gateway?
Storage gateway is a product which integrates local infrastructure and AWS storage such as S3, EBS Snapshots and Glacier. Uses iSCSI mount. The communication happens through the public internet or Direct Connect.
Stored mode:
- Does not improve Datacenter capacity. The main copy of the data is stored on the Storeage Gateway VM on premeses, and create EBS snaphots through the public Storage Gateway endpoint on AWS.
- Perfect for backup and DR.
- Low latency access to data
Cached mode:
- The primary location for the data is in S3. The Storage Gateway VM instead of a local storage volume has a local cache.
- Data center extension architecture. Perfect for gradually migration.

What Is
DataSync?
AWS DataSync is an agent-based solution for migrating on-premises storage to AWS. It allows you to easily move data between NFS and SMB shares and AWS storage solutions.
for a one-time migration. 10Gbps per agent
If you have hybrid architecture and want a continuous sync, think Storage Gateway.

What Is the AWS
Transfer Family?
The AWS Transfer Family allows you to easily move files in and out of S3 or EFS using Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP), File Transfer Protocol over SSL (FTPS), or the File Transfer Protocol (FTP), AS2(Applicability Statment 2) for B2B.
The AWS Transfer Family excels when you have a collection of leagacy
applications using protocols that cannot be changed. You can easily “trick”these applications into using S3 storage.. The DNS entry stays the same, but the location for the storage becomes S3.
- The endpoint can be public(SFTP), in vpc internet(AS2, SFTP,FTPS), in vpc internal(AS2, SFTP,FTPS, FTP).
What Is AWS
Migration Hub?
AWS Migration Hub gives you a single place to track the progress of your application migration to AWS. It integrates with Server Migration Service (SMS) and Database Migration Service (DMS).
For application migration(database or server). complete migration. It’s easy to migrate to Aurora or RDS.
What AWS Application Discovery Service can do?
- Plan: Helps plan migrations to AWS via collection of usage and configuration data from on-premises servers
- Simplify: Integrates with AWS Migration Hub, simplifying migrations and tracking migration statuses
- Track: Helps you easily view discovered servers, group them by application, and track each application migration
What is AWS Application Discovery Service
two types of discoveries.
Agentless:
- Completed via the Agentless Collector
- OVA file within the VMware vCenter
- Identifies hosts and VMs in vCenter
- IP and MAC address, resource allocations, and hostnames
- Utilization of data metrics
Agent Based:
- Deploy AWS Application Discovery Agent
- Each VM and each physical server
- Installer for Windows and Linux
- Static config data, time-series performance info, network connections,
and OS processes
What is AWS MGN?
AWS Application Migration Service
- Automated lift-and-shift service for expediting migration of apps to AWS
- Used for physical, virtual, or cloud servers to avoid cutover windows or
disruptions - Replicates source servers into AWS, and automatically converts and launches on AWS to migrate quickly
for infrastructure
What are RTO and RPO in AWS MGN?
- Recovery Time Objective: Typically just minutes, dependent on OS boot time
- Recovery Point Objective: Measured in the sub-second range
